This error may occur when trying to connect to Access2000 databases:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x58c Thread 0x3cc DBC 0x131edfd4 Jet'.

There are at least 3 possible causes for this error:

1. Your connection string does not have the correct complete path and filename for the database. Please remember that filenames are case-sensitive. You can use this code to get the path to your database:

function getRootPath()
getRootPath = left(server.mappath("\"), len(server.mappath("\")) - len("public"))
end function

mdbfile = "databases/sample.mdb" 'put .mdb files in databases folder in the root of your web site
connstr = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & getRootPath() & mdbfile & ";"

2. Your database is not Access2000. Please download and convert to Access2000 and then reupload.

3. Once in a while, a database may get corrupted because it wasn't closed properly. You should explicitly close your database in .asp as soon as you are done accessing them. It is extremely poor programming to put the connection object to a database in a session variable which will persist across pages.

You can repair the database using these steps:

- Using an FTP program, rename the affected database to a different filename so the web site will not continue to try to access it. For example, rename products.mdb to productsbackup.mdb.
- Delete the lock file for the database if there is one. In this example, delete products.ldb.
- Download the renamed database to your workstation. In this example, download productsbackup.mdb.
- Open up the database with Access2000 and repair the database by choosing Tools then Database Utilities and then Compact and Repair Database
- Rename the repaired database so you don't overwrite the backup on the web site. In this example, rename productsbackup.mdb to productsrepaired.mdb.
- Upload the repaired database to the web site. In this example, upload productsrepaired.mdb
- Rename the database on the web site to the original name. In this example, rename productsrepaired.mdb to products.mdb.
- Test the site to see if this fixed the problem. You can delete the backup database in the future when you are confident the problem is fixed. In this case productsbackup.mdb.
